Aluminum Alloy Series Guide: 1000 to 7000 Series Explained
The 4-digit alloy designation system tells you the primary alloying element and expected properties.
Series Overview
- 1xxx: Pure Al (99%+). Excellent corrosion, high conductivity, low strength. Foil, chemical equipment.
- 2xxx: Copper alloy. Highest strength (2024: 470 MPa). Aerospace. Poor corrosion, needs cladding.
- 3xxx: Manganese. 20% stronger than 1xxx. 3003 = most widely used. Roofing, tanks, cooking utensils.
- 5xxx: Magnesium. Marine corrosion resistance. 5083/5086 for boat hulls, trailers.
- 6xxx: Mg + Si. Most versatile. 6061-T6 = structural default (310 MPa). 6063 = architectural extrusions.
- 7xxx: Zinc. Highest strength (7075-T6: 570 MPa). Aerospace, sporting goods.
