Steel Plate Cutting Methods: Laser, Plasma & Waterjet Compared
Three dominant cutting technologies compete: laser, plasma, and waterjet. Each has distinct advantages in precision, speed, thickness, and cost.
Laser Cutting
Fiber laser (1-20kW) melts steel with focused beam. Precision: +/-0.1mm, kerf 0.1-0.3mm. Max ~25-30mm carbon steel. Best for precision parts up to 25mm.
Plasma Cutting
Electric arc creates plasma jet at 28,000 C. Cuts 150mm+, faster than laser for thick sections. Lower cost for thick plate. Wider kerf (1-3mm), more HAZ.
Waterjet Cutting
Ultra-high-pressure water (40,000-90,000 PSI) + abrasive garnet. Cold cutting – no HAZ. Can cut any material. Slowest method, highest operating cost.
Comparison
| Factor | Laser | Plasma | Waterjet |

| Max Thickness | ~30mm | 150mm+ | 150-200mm |
| Precision | +/-0.1mm | +/-0.5mm | +/-0.1mm |
| HAZ | Small | Large | None |
| Cost | Medium | Low | High |
