Steel Coil Weight Calculator: Formula, Chart & Examples

Accurately calculating steel coil weight is essential for logistics planning, cost estimation, and load optimization. This guide provides formulas, reference charts, and worked examples for all common steel types.

The Basic Formula

Weight (kg) = Width (m) x Thickness (mm) x Length (m) x Density (kg/m3) / 1000. Carbon steel density = 7850, stainless 304 = 7930, aluminum = 2710. This works for any flat-rolled product.

Quick Reference Chart

Carbon Steel 1.0mm x 1000mm = 7.85 kg/m; 1.5mm x 1250mm = 14.72 kg/m; 2.0mm x 1500mm = 23.55 kg/m. Galvanized adds ~0.22 kg/m2 for zinc. Stainless 304 1.0mm x 1000mm = 7.93 kg/m. Aluminum 1.0mm x 1000mm = 2.71 kg/m.

Worked Example: GI Coil

0.5mm x 1200mm x Z275, 800m length. Steel weight = 0.0005 x 1.2 x 800 x 7850 / 1000 = 3768 kg. Zinc weight = 275 x 2 x 1.2 x 800 / 1000 = 528 kg. Total ~4296 kg (4.3 tons).

Transport Planning

A 20ft container max payload ~28 tons. Heavy coils (8-15 tons) fit 2 per container. Lighter gauge coils (3-5 tons) fit 5-6. Include packaging weight (200-500 kg per coil).

Weight Verification Tips

Verify mill test certificate vs actual scale weight (tolerance within 3%). Measure thickness with micrometer at multiple points. Check width at edges. For galvanized, verify zinc coating via triple spot test. CoreMetal provides certified weight documentation.
