Stainless Steel Passivation: Process, Benefits & Standards
Passivation is the final critical step in stainless steel fabrication that restores corrosion resistance. It removes free iron contaminants and accelerates chromium oxide layer formation. This guide explains why passivation matters, how it works, and which standards to follow.
Why Stainless Steel Needs Passivation
Stainless steel owes its corrosion resistance to a chromium oxide layer forming when chromium exceeds 10.5%. Fabrication processes like machining and welding can embed free iron particles that become corrosion sites, leading to rust and pitting even on 316L grade.
The Passivation Process
The most common method uses nitric acid solutions per ASTM A967. Steps: thorough cleaning, immersion in 20-25% nitric acid at 49-60 degrees C for 20-30 minutes, rinsing, and drying. The acid dissolves free iron while promoting chromium oxide formation.
Citric Acid vs Nitric Acid
Citric acid passivation offers environmental advantages: no hazardous fumes, biodegradable waste, no special disposal. Studies show equal performance for most applications. Nitric acid remains preferred for high-alloy stainless steels (duplex, super austenitic).
Key Standards
ASTM A967 defines six citric acid cycles and two nitric acid cycles. AMS 2700 covers passivation procedures. Testing includes copper sulfate, ferroxyl, and water immersion tests per ASTM A967 to verify effectiveness.
When Mandatory
Required after machining, grinding, welding, or any iron-contact operation. Mandatory in pharmaceutical (FDA), food processing (3-A Sanitary), and semiconductor applications. CoreMetal provides passivation services with full test certificates.
