How to Read a Mill Test Certificate (MTC): A Buyer Complete Guide
Every shipment of steel should come with a Mill Test Certificate (MTC). This document is your primary evidence that the steel matches the specification you ordered.
1. Certificate Types: EN 10204 Classification
| Type | Description | Assurance Level |
|---|---|---|
| 2.1 | Statement of compliance | Basic – no test data |
| 2.2 | Test report with results | Moderate |
| 3.1 | Independent inspection certificate | Industry standard |
| 3.2 | Third-party verified | Highest (SGS, BV, TUV) |
2. Key Sections of an MTC
a) Header: Manufacturer name, certificate number, standard reference
b) Product ID: Description, heat/batch number, quantity, grade
c) Chemical Composition: C, Si, Mn, P, S, Cr, Ni, Mo in weight %
d) Mechanical Properties: Yield strength (Re), tensile strength (Rm), elongation (A), impact energy (CVN)
3. Red Flags to Check
- Heat number mismatch: MTC heat number must match product marking
- Values outside spec range: Any out-of-range value means non-compliance
- Missing inspector signature: Required for Type 3.1
- Vague product description: Should specify exact dimensions
4. How CoreMetal Ensures Certificate Integrity
Every shipment includes original EN 10204 3.1 certificates. Third-party inspection (SGS, BV, TUV) available for Type 3.2.
