Purpose of Hydrostatic Testing

Test Pressure Requirements

ASME B31.3 (Process Piping)

ASME B31.4 (Pipeline Transportation)

Test Procedure

Pre-Test Preparation

  1. Flush and clean the pipeline
  2. Install blind flanges and test plugs
  3. Connect test pump and instrumentation
  4. Fill pipeline with water, vent air
  5. Perform visual inspection

Pressure Testing Steps

  1. Apply initial pressure to 50% of test pressure
  2. Inspect for leaks, hold for 10 minutes
  3. Increase pressure in increments (25% steps)
  4. Hold final test pressure for specified duration
  5. Record pressure readings throughout
  6. Slowly release pressure

  • Use calibrated pressure gauges (dual instrumentation)
  • Ensure adequate restraint of test equipment
  • Follow lockout/tagout procedures
  • Plan controlled pressure release

Documentation Requirements

Maintain records of test pressure, temperature, duration, pressure readings, visual observations, and any anomalies detected during the test.
