The Critical Role of Valve Selection in Process Piping
Valves are the control points of any process piping system. They regulate flow, isolate equipment, prevent backflow, and provide overpressure protection. Selecting the right valve type, size, material, and actuation method is one of the most important decisions in process piping engineering.
Major Valve Types
Gate Valves
Gate valves provide linear motion isolation with minimal pressure drop when fully open. Designed for fully open or fully closed service, not suitable for throttling. Sizes: DN15 to DN1200. Pressure ratings: Class 150 to Class 2500.
Globe Valves
Globe valves provide precise flow regulation through a plug against a ring seat. The S-pattern flow path creates higher pressure drop but excellent throttling. Sizes: DN15 to DN600.
Ball Valves
Ball valves use a rotating ball with a through-hole. Available in full-bore and reduced-bore configurations. Quick quarter-turn operation, tight shutoff. Sizes: DN15 to DN1200.
Butterfly Valves
Butterfly valves use a rotating disc. Modern high-performance designs with offset discs provide excellent shutoff and throttling. Sizes: DN50 to DN2400.
Check Valves
Prevent reverse flow without external actuation. Types include swing check, lift check, dual-plate, and silent check valves.
Valve Material Selection
Carbon steel (A216 WCB) for service to 425 degrees C. Chrome-moly alloy (WC6, WC9) to 600 degrees C. Stainless steel (CF8/304, CF8M/316) for corrosive service. API 600 specifies standard trim materials from Trim 1 to Trim 12.
Valve Sizing
Flow coefficient Cv represents flow capacity. For liquids: Cv = Q x sqrt(G/delta_P). Valve selection must account for acceptable pressure drop and flow velocity.
Actuation Methods
Manual (handwheels, levers, gears) for infrequent operation. Electric for precise positioning. Pneumatic for fast fail-safe operation. Hydraulic for highest torque.

API 600 (gate valves), API 608 (ball valves), API 594 (check valves), API 609 (butterfly valves), ASME B16.34 (pressure-temperature ratings), API 6D (pipeline valves).
