Proper pipe support design is essential for safe piping system operation. Supports control pipe movement, carry weight, manage thermal expansion forces, and protect connected equipment from excessive nozzle loads. The three fundamental types – fixed, guided, and free – form the basis of all piping support systems.

  • Foundation anchors: Base plates with anchor bolts on concrete foundations
  • U-bolt anchors: Heavy-duty U-bolts for smaller diameter pipes

Design Considerations

Fixed anchors must resist full thermal expansion force plus friction from guided supports. In large-bore, high-temperature piping, anchor forces can exceed 500 kN (50 tonnes). The supporting structure must be verified to carry anchor loads.

Guided Supports

Definition

Allow pipe movement in one direction (axial) while restraining lateral and vertical movement. They ensure thermal expansion occurs in the intended path and prevent buckling.

Types

  • Guide brackets: Installed at 1/3 and 2/3 points of expansion loop legs
  • Guide shoes: U-shaped shoes with slide plates
  • Ring guides: Clamp-on rings riding on structural rails

Spacing

First guide from anchor: maximum 14 pipe diameters. Subsequent guides: typically every 6-12 meters depending on diameter.

Friction Coefficients

  • Steel-on-steel (dry): 0.3-0.5
  • Steel-on-steel (lubricated): 0.1-0.2
  • PTFE-on-steel: 0.05-0.10

Free (Sliding) Supports

Definition

Carry vertical weight while allowing unrestricted horizontal movement. Most common support type in straight pipe runs.

Types

  • Roller supports: For large-diameter, heavy pipes requiring low friction
  • Slide plate supports: PTFE or polished stainless steel plate
  • Spring supports: Variable or constant type for vertical thermal movement
  • Hanger rods: Suspend pipe from overhead structure

Maximum Span Guidelines

  • Small bore (DN15-DN50): 3-6 meters
  • Medium bore (DN100-DN300): 6-12 meters
  • Large bore (DN400+): 12-18 meters

Spring Supports

Variable Spring Supports

Support force varies with displacement. Variability should not exceed 25%. General purpose where variable loading is acceptable.

Constant Spring Supports

Essentially constant supporting force throughout full vertical movement. Higher cost, used where variable loading would overload equipment nozzles.
