Why Branch Connections Need Reinforcement
Branch connections create an opening in the main pipe, reducing the pressure-containing cross-section and creating stress concentration. Without proper reinforcement, the branch becomes the weakest point – prone to burst, fatigue failure, or corrosion-related thinning.
Types of Branch Reinforcement Fittings
Weldolet (Welding Outlet): Butt-weld branch connection with contoured body. Strongest type. Full penetration weld. Sizes: 1/2 inch to 48 inch. Standard MSS SP-97.
Sockolet (Socket-Weld Outlet): For smaller branch lines (2 inch and below). Socket-weld connection. Best for high-pressure, small-bore connections.
Threadolet (Threaded Outlet): NPT threaded connection. No welding required. Limited to Class 3000 or below.
Area Replacement Calculation per ASME B31.3
A_required = d x t_r x F (d = opening diameter, t_r = required thickness, F = correction factor). Available area must equal or exceed required area. Weldolet fittings provide inherent reinforcement from their contoured geometry.
Installation Procedures for Weldolet Fittings
- Mark branch location and verify orientation
- Cut circular opening per manufacturer cutting diameter
- Fit-up: position Weldolet, check gaps (max 3mm)
- Weld per WPS: GTAW root pass, GMAW/SMAW fill and cap
- Inspect: 100% visual + MT/PT for critical service
