Understanding Steel Coil Slitting Waste
Steel coil slitting cuts a wide master coil into narrower strips. The process inevitably generates waste — edge trim, kerf loss, and off-spec material. Understanding and minimizing waste directly impacts material costs.
Types of Slitting Waste
1. Edge Trim
- Hot-rolled coil: 15-25mm per side
- Cold-rolled coil: 5-15mm per side
- Stainless steel: 10-20mm per side
- Aluminum: 5-10mm per side
2. Slitter Knife Kerf
- Standard knife: 3-5mm per cut
- Thin knife: 1.5-3mm per cut
- 10 strips = 9 cuts × 3mm = 27mm total kerf
Yield Calculation Formula
Yield (%) = (Total useful strip width ÷ Master coil width) × 100
Example
Master coil: 1250mm. Required: 4 × 300mm strips.
- Useful width: 4 × 300 = 1200mm
- Edge trim: 2 × 15 = 30mm
- Kerf: 4 × 3 = 12mm
- Residual: 1250 – 1242 = 8mm
- Yield: 1200/1250 = 96.0%
How to Minimize Waste
1. Optimize Master Coil Width
Choose widths that best fit your strip requirements. Standard widths: 1000, 1219, 1250, 1500mm.
2. Group Orders
Combine similar-width strips. Run multiple patterns in sequence.
3. Use Thinner Kerf Knives
Thin knives (2mm vs 5mm) recover significant width over multiple cuts.
4. Recycle Edge Trim
Edge trim retains 60-80% of prime material value as clean scrap.
