Steel Angle: Applications, Specifications, and Sourcing Guide

Steel angle, also known as L-shaped steel or angle iron, is one of the most versatile structural profiles used in construction, manufacturing, and infrastructure projects. Its simple L-shaped cross section provides excellent strength-to-weight ratio for framing, bracing, support, and decorative applications. Understanding the available specifications, material grades, and quality factors helps professionals source the right angle steel for their specific needs.

What Is Steel Angle?

Steel angle is a long steel product with an L-shaped cross section, characterized by two legs (flanges) meeting at a 90-degree angle. Angles can be equal leg (both legs the same length) or unequal leg (legs of different lengths). The included angle is typically 90 degrees, though special angles are available for specific applications.

The manufacturing process involves either hot rolling a billet through shaped rollers or cold forming steel strip through a series of forming dies. Hot rolled angles are used for structural applications requiring high strength, while cold formed angles offer tighter tolerances and smoother surfaces for fabrication and decorative applications.

Equal vs Unequal Leg Angles

Equal leg angles, where both flanges are the same length, are the most common type and are used where loading is symmetrical or where the angle is used for general framing and bracing. Sizes range from 20x20mm to 200x200mm with leg thicknesses from 3mm to 20mm.

Unequal leg angles have one longer leg and one shorter leg, providing optimized strength distribution for applications where loading is primarily in one direction. They are commonly used in building construction where the angle connects to surfaces at different heights, and in machinery frames where directional load distribution matters.

Common Applications

  • Construction: Door and window frames, lintels, wall angles, shelf supports, mezzanine framing
  • Structural: Truss members, bracing, gusset plates, base plates, column base angles
  • Industrial: Machine frames, conveyor supports, platform edging, equipment mounting
  • Infrastructure: Bridge railing supports, tower bracing, transmission tower members, sign post supports
  • Decorative: Trim, edge protection, architectural features, furniture framing

Material Grades and Standards

Steel angle is available in carbon steel grades including Q235B, Q345B (Chinese), SS400 (Japanese), A36 (American), and S235JR/S275JR/S355JR (European). Stainless steel angles in grades 304 and 316 are used for corrosive environments and architectural applications. Galvanized angles provide corrosion protection for outdoor and industrial applications.
