Understanding the Passive Layer on Stainless Steel
Stainless steel owes its corrosion resistance to a thin, invisible chromium oxide layer (the passive layer) that forms naturally when chromium content exceeds 10.5%. Manufacturing processes like welding, machining, and grinding can damage this layer, creating sites vulnerable to corrosion.
Pickling vs Passivation: What Is the Difference
Pickling is an aggressive treatment using HF + HNO3 mixtures to remove damaged surface layers, weld discoloration, and contaminants. Result: clean, matte, silver-white surface.
Passivation is a milder treatment using nitric acid or citric acid to enhance the natural oxide layer without significant metal removal. It does not remove heat tint.
Pickling Procedures for Stainless Steel Pipes
Step 1: Pre-Cleaning – Remove all grease, oil, and organic contamination.
Step 2: Pickling Solution – Nitric acid (8-15%) + Hydrofluoric acid (1-5%) + deionized water. Temperature: ambient to 60C.
Step 3: Application Methods – Immersion (tank), circulation (for long pipes), or paste application (field treatment).
Step 4: Rinsing – Thorough rinse with clean water. Final rinse pH should be neutral (6-8).
Passivation Procedures
Nitric Acid Method (ASTM A967): 20-25% HNO3, 21-35C, 20-30 minutes contact time.
Citric Acid Method (Eco-Friendly): 4-10% citric acid, 49-71C, 15-30 minutes. Non-toxic, biodegradable.
Quality Verification and Testing
- Visual Inspection: Uniform matte silver-white surface
- Ferroxyl Test (ASTM A380): Blue spots within 30 seconds indicate free iron
- Copper Sulfate Test: No copper deposition in 6 minutes
- Water Wetting Test: Water should spread into a continuous film
Safety Requirements
HF is extremely dangerous – requires full face shield, acid-resistant suit, butyl rubber gloves, calcium gluconate gel on-site, and emergency eyewash within 10 seconds travel time.
