What Is Electropolishing?

Electropolishing is an electrochemical process that removes a controlled layer of metal from the surface of stainless steel to produce a smooth, bright, corrosion-resistant finish. Unlike mechanical polishing, electropolishing uniformly removes the entire surface, eliminating defects, embedded iron, and micro-cracks.

The stainless steel workpiece serves as the anode, and material is dissolved from its surface into a heated electrolyte bath under carefully controlled conditions.

The Electropolishing Process: Step by Step

Step 1: Pre-Cleaning

  • Alkaline soak cleaning at 60-80 degrees C
  • Ultrasonic cleaning for complex geometries
  • Rinse with deionized water

Step 2: Electropolishing

  • Electrolyte: Phosphoric acid + sulfuric acid mixture
  • Bath Temperature: 50-80 degrees C
  • Current Density: 1.5-5.0 A/dm2
  • Processing Time: 3-20 minutes
  • Material Removal: 5-40 microns typical

Step 3: Post-Treatment

  • Thorough rinsing in DI water
  • Optional passivation for enhanced corrosion resistance
  • Drying with hot air or nitrogen

Benefits of Electropolishing

1. Enhanced Corrosion Resistance

Electropolishing removes the iron-depleted layer, creating a uniform, chromium-rich passive film. This improves pitting corrosion resistance by 30x or more compared to as-machined surfaces.

2. Improved Surface Finish

Surface roughness (Ra) can be reduced by 30-60%. A typical 0.8 micrometer Ra surface can be reduced to 0.2-0.4 micrometers, producing a bright, reflective finish.

3. Hygienic Surface

Electropolished surfaces have no embedded contaminants, micro-pores, or directional scratches that can harbor bacteria. This is essential for pharmaceutical, food processing, and semiconductor applications.

4. Deburring

The process preferentially removes sharp edges and burrs, producing radiused edges that improve fatigue life and safety.

5. Passive Film Enhancement

The chromium-to-iron ratio on the surface increases from approximately 1.5:1 (as-machined) to 3:1 or higher after electropolishing, creating a more stable passive film.
