Corrosion Challenges in Desalination

Recommended Stainless Steel Grades

Duplex Stainless Steel (2205/2507)

  • Pitting Resistance Equivalent (PREN): 32-40
  • Excellent chloride stress corrosion cracking resistance
  • Higher strength than austenitic grades
  • Cost-effective for large-scale applications

Super Austenitic Stainless Steel (904L, 254 SMO)

  • PREN: 40-50
  • Superior pitting and crevice corrosion resistance
  • Excellent for heat exchangers and piping
  • Higher cost, used where maximum resistance required

Austenitic Stainless Steel (316L)

  • PREN: 24-30
  • Acceptable for lower chloride environments
  • Cost-effective for non-critical applications
  • Requires careful specification and inspection
