Types of Stainless Steel Cable Trays

Ladder Type Cable Tray

Ladder cable trays consist of two longitudinal side rails connected by individual transverse members (rungs), resembling a ladder. They provide excellent ventilation and are the most economical option for heavy power cables.

  • Width: 150mm to 900mm standard

Trough (Ventilated) Cable Tray

Trough cable trays feature a formed sheet metal bottom with ventilated sides. They provide more cable support than ladder types while still allowing airflow.

Solid Bottom Cable Tray

Solid bottom trays provide continuous support along the entire cable length. They are required for cables that need support at close intervals or where dust and debris protection is essential.

  • Applications: Food processing, pharmaceutical, semiconductor manufacturing

Wire Mesh Cable Tray

Wire mesh cable trays are made from welded stainless steel wire forming a grid pattern. They are lightweight, easy to cut and modify on-site, and provide maximum ventilation.

  • Wire diameter: Typically 4mm to 6mm
  • Mesh opening: 50mm x 100mm or 50mm x 50mm

Load Capacity and Fill Ratio

Per NEC Article 392 and IEC 61537 standards:

  • Maximum fill ratio: 50% for ladder and ventilated trough trays, 40% for solid bottom trays
  • Load classes: Light duty (50 kg/m), Medium duty (100 kg/m), Heavy duty (150 kg/m)
  • Safety factor: Minimum 1.5:1 for support span at rated load
  • Deflection limit: Span/200 at maximum rated load

Surface Finishes for Cable Trays

  • Mill finish (No.1): Standard hot-rolled finish, adequate for most indoor applications
  • Brushed finish (No.4): Satin appearance, common for visible installations
  • Mirror finish (No.8): Highly reflective, used in decorative or food-grade applications
  • Passivated: Chemical treatment to enhance corrosion resistance

Installation Guidelines

  1. Plan cable tray routing before installation, considering future cable additions
  2. Maximum support spacing: 1.2m to 2.4m depending on load and tray type
  3. Maintain minimum 300mm clearance from heat sources and steam lines
  4. Provide expansion joints every 30m for long straight runs
  5. Use appropriate fittings: horizontal bends (90, 45, 30 degrees), vertical bends (inside/outside), tees, and crosses
  6. Ensure proper grounding and bonding per NEC 392.60
  7. Separate power and communication cables with dividers where required

Fire Rating and Compliance

Stainless steel cable trays offer inherent fire resistance advantages:

  • Non-combustible material – does not contribute to fire spread
  • Melting point above 1400 degrees C (vs. 660 degrees C for aluminum)
