Galvanized Steel vs Stainless Steel: When to Use Which?
Both resist corrosion, but they work differently. Choosing wrong can cost thousands in premature failure.
Corrosion Mechanism
Galvanized: Zinc coating sacrificially protects steel. Once consumed, rust begins. Z275 provides 20-50 years in rural air. Stainless: Chromium oxide layer self-heals when damaged. Essentially indefinite protection.
Cost
Galvanized costs 30-50% more than bare carbon steel. 304 SS costs 3-4x carbon steel. For large projects with moderate conditions, galvanized offers best value.
Temperature
Galvanized limited to 200 C. Stainless (304) handles 870 C, 310S up to 1150 C. High-temp = stainless only.
Decision Guide
