Duplex Steel Welded Pipe: Applications, Advantages, and Specifications Guide 2026
Duplex stainless steel welded pipe has emerged as a cost-effective alternative to seamless duplex pipe in applications where the combination of high strength and excellent corrosion resistance is critical. With global demand for duplex materials growing in oil & gas, chemical processing, and marine environments, understanding the capabilities and limitations of welded duplex pipe is essential for engineers and procurement professionals.
Xi’an Coremetal Steel Co., Ltd. supplies duplex stainless steel welded pipe in grades 2205 (S31803/S32205) and 2507 (S32750), manufactured to international standards with full material traceability and third-party inspection support.
What Is Duplex Stainless Steel?
Duplex stainless steels have a mixed microstructure of approximately 50% austenite and 50% ferrite. This dual-phase structure provides:
- Double the yield strength of standard austenitic grades (304/316)
- Superior chloride stress corrosion cracking resistance compared to 300 series
- Excellent pitting and crevice corrosion resistance
- Good weldability with proper procedures
- Lower nickel content than equivalent austenitic grades, reducing cost volatility exposure
Why Welded Pipe? Advantages Over Seamless
| Factor | Welded Duplex Pipe | Seamless Duplex Pipe |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | 20-30% lower | Higher material + processing cost |
| Wall thickness consistency | Excellent (±5%) | Good but less uniform |
| Surface quality | Superior (both ID & OD) | Variable inside surface |
| Length availability | Longer lengths possible | Standard lengths |
| Size range | Up to 2500mm OD | Limited to ~660mm OD |
| Production lead time | Shorter | Longer for large diameters |
Common Duplex Welded Pipe Grades
| Grade | UNS | PREN | Yield Strength (MPa) | Typical Applications |
|---|---|---|---|---|

| 2205 (S32205) | S32205 | 35-40 | ≥450 | Enhanced version with higher Mo, N |
| 2304 | S32304 | 24-28 | ≥400 | Water systems, moderate chloride environments |
| 2507 (Super Duplex) | S32750 | ≥40 | ≥550 | Offshore platforms, subsea pipelines |
| LDX 2101 (Lean Duplex) | S32101 | 26-28 | ≥450 | Structural applications, bridge construction |
Manufacturing Process for Duplex Welded Pipe
Duplex welded pipe is produced through several methods:
1. ERW (Electric Resistance Welding) – Cold-formed plate is welded by electrical resistance heating. Used for smaller diameters and thinner walls. Modern ERW with post-weld heat treatment produces properties comparable to the parent metal.
2. SAW (Submerged Arc Welding) – Plate is formed and welded under flux using one or more passes. Used for large-diameter, thick-wall pipe. Multiple welding heads can complete the weld in a single pass.
3. TIG/GTAW (Tungsten Inert Gas) – Used for precision applications and orbital welding of smaller diameters. Produces the highest quality welds with minimal heat input.
Post-Weld Heat Treatment
Proper heat treatment is critical for duplex welded pipe. The weld zone must be solution annealed (typically 1020-1100°C for 2205, 1050-1120°C for 2507) followed by rapid quenching to restore the balanced 50/50 austenite-ferrite ratio. Inadequate heat treatment can result in excessive ferrite or harmful intermetallic phase formation (sigma phase), severely compromising corrosion resistance and toughness.
Applications of Duplex Welded Pipe
- Oil & Gas – Flowlines, gathering lines, risers, and subsea pipelines in sour service environments
- Chemical Processing — Reactor feed lines, heat exchanger tubing, and process piping handling corrosive media
- Desalination — Intake and outfall lines, high-pressure RO piping
- Marine — Firewater systems, ballast lines, and seawater cooling circuits
- Pulp & Paper — Digesters, bleach plant piping, and evaporator tubing
- Pharmaceutical — Sanitary process lines requiring high purity and corrosion resistance
Quality Standards and Testing
Duplex welded pipe is manufactured and tested to standards including:
- ASTM A814/A814M – Cold-formed welded stainless steel pipe
- ASTM A790/A790M – Seamless and welded ferritic/austenitic pipe
- ASTM A928 – Ferritic/austenitic welded pipe with filler metal
- EN 10217-7 – Welded steel tubes for pressure purposes, stainless steel
