Why Manufacturing Method Matters for Duplex Stainless Steel
Duplex stainless steels possess a mixed microstructure of ~50% austenite and ~50% ferrite, providing high strength and excellent corrosion resistance. However, this dual-phase microstructure is sensitive to thermal history, making the manufacturing method critically important.
Seamless Duplex SS Pipe Manufacturing
Process: Billet heating (1150-1250C) -> Mannesmann piercing or extrusion -> Cold drawing -> Solution annealing (1020-1100C) + quenching -> Final processing.
Advantages: Uniform properties, no weld seam, better pressure resistance, preferred for high-pressure/high-temperature service.
Disadvantages: Higher cost (especially large diameters), longer lead times, wider wall thickness tolerance.
Welded Duplex SS Pipe Manufacturing
Process: Plate/coil forming -> Welding (GTAW/GMAW/PAW/Laser) -> Post-weld heat treatment (solution anneal 1020-1100C + quench) -> Optional cold sizing.
Advantages: 20-40% lower cost, tighter wall tolerance, shorter lead times, available in larger diameters.
Disadvantages: Weld seam requires extensive testing, some specifications still prefer seamless.
Microstructure Comparison
Seamless: Uniform austenite/ferrite ratio throughout, no weld HAZ. Welded: Base metal similar to seamless, but weld metal and HAZ require careful control of cooling rate to maintain correct phase balance and prevent chromium nitride precipitation.
Testing and Quality Requirements
- Ferrite content: Target 35-65% (ideally 40-60%)
- Intergranular corrosion test: ASTM A923
- Pitting corrosion test: ASTM G48
- Impact testing for low-temperature service
- 100% NDE of weld seam for welded pipe
Application-Based Selection
| Application | Recommended | Rationale |
|---|---|---|
| Offshore oil and gas | Seamless | No weld seam, maximum integrity |
| Subsea pipelines | Seamless preferred | Inaccessible service |
| Chemical processing | Either | Welded acceptable with proper PWHT |
| Desalination plants | Welded | Cost-effective, large diameters |
| Heat exchanger tubes | Seamless | Better heat transfer, thinner walls |
