Why Galvanize Carbon Steel Pipes?
Carbon steel is susceptible to rust when exposed to moisture. Galvanizing — coating steel with zinc — provides sacrificial protection extending pipe life by 50+ years. The two primary methods are hot-dip galvanizing (HDG) and electro-galvanizing (EG).
Hot-Dip Galvanizing (HDG)
Steel pipes are immersed in molten zinc at approximately 450°C. The zinc reacts with iron forming metallurgical alloy layers.
- Thickness: 45-85 μm (up to 150+ μm for heavy-duty)
- Coating weight: 300-600 g/m²
- Bond: Metallurgical (cannot be peeled)
- Corrosion resistance: Excellent (50+ years)
Electro-Galvanizing (EG)
Zinc is deposited onto steel from an electrolyte solution using electrical current at room temperature.
- Thickness: 5-25 μm
- Coating weight: 30-150 g/m²
- Bond: Mechanical (electrodeposited)
- Corrosion resistance: Moderate (5-15 years)
Side-by-Side Comparison
| Parameter | Hot-Dip (HDG) | Electro (EG) |
|---|---|---|
| Coating Thickness | 45 – 85 μm | 5 – 25 μm |
| Bond Type | Metallurgical | Mechanical |
| Service Life | 50+ years | 5-15 years |
| Interior Coating | Yes (both sides) | Limited |
| Appearance | Spangled/matte | Smooth, bright |
| Cost | Higher | Lower |
| Best For | Outdoor, buried, marine | Indoor, decorative |
How to Choose
- Choose Hot-Dip when: outdoor exposure, buried, marine, 30+ year life required
- Choose Electro when: indoor use, decorative finish needed, cost is primary
