Steel Coil Thickness Tolerance: International Standards Explained

Thickness tolerance is one of the most common disputes in steel trading. Different standards define different limits, and understanding them can save you money and prevent disputes.

1. Why It Matters

  • You may receive thinner material than needed (structural concern)
  • You are paying for weight you do not need (cost concern)
  • Downstream processing may be affected

2. Hot-Rolled Coil Tolerance

Thickness ASTM A568 EN 10051 JIS G3193
1.2-2.0mm ±0.12 ±0.09 ±0.10
2.0-2.5mm ±0.14 ±0.11 ±0.12
3.0-5.0mm ±0.18 ±0.15 ±0.16

3. Cold-Rolled Coil Tolerance

Thickness ASTM A1008 EN 10130 JIS G3141
0.3-0.6mm ±0.03 ±0.02 ±0.03
0.6-1.0mm ±0.05 ±0.04 ±0.04
1.6-2.5mm ±0.09 ±0.08 ±0.08

4. Standard vs Tight Tolerance

  • Standard (Class A): Values above. General applications.
  • Tight (Class B): 50-60% of standard. Automotive, precision stamping. +2-5% cost.

5. How to Specify on Orders

  1. Nominal thickness with tolerance class
  2. Width and edge type
  3. Standard reference
  4. Ordered vs minimum guaranteed thickness
