1. The Basic Oxygen Furnace (BOF) Process

  • Raw material: Iron ore processed in blast furnace to molten pig iron
  • Process: Pig iron + scrap (10-30%) charged into converter, oxygen blown to oxidize impurities
  • Temperature: ~1650°C
  • Batch size: 200-400 tons

BOF accounts for approximately 70% of global steel production.

2. The Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) Process

  • Raw material: Primarily scrap steel (80-100%), plus DRI or HBI
  • Process: Graphite electrodes create electric arcs to melt scrap
  • Temperature: ~1800°C at arc zone
  • Batch size: 50-200 tons
