Steel Coil Packaging: Best Practices for Export Shipping

Steel coils are high-value, heavy products (typically 5-30 tons each) that face significant risks during ocean freight: corrosion from salt spray, mechanical damage from handling, shifting during vessel motion, and edge damage from improper securing. Proper packaging prevents millions in potential losses and ensures product arrives in factory-ready condition.

Why Proper Steel Coil Packaging Matters

Steel coils are high-value, heavy products (typically 5-30 tons each) that face significant risks during ocean freight: corrosion from salt spray, mechanical damage from handling, shifting during vessel motion, and edge damage from improper securing. Proper packaging prevents millions in potential losses and ensures product arrives in factory-ready condition.

Standard Export Packaging Layers

Professional steel coil export packaging typically uses 4-5 protective layers: (1) Inner VCI (Vapor Corrosion Inhibitor) paper wrapping directly on the steel surface. (2) Waterproof plastic sheet (PE film, 0.1-0.2mm) for moisture barrier. (3) Corrugated cardboard or honeycomb board for mechanical protection. (4) Steel strip banding (3-4 bands) for securing. (5) Optional outer steel sheet or wooden crate for maximum protection.

Seaworthy Packaging Standards

Seaworthy packaging must withstand: 30+ days ocean transit, 90%+ humidity environments, temperature variations from 5°C to 45°C, and multiple crane/forklift handling operations. Key requirements: desiccant packets inside packaging (2-4kg per coil), eye-to-sky or eye-to-wall orientation clearly marked, non-skid wooden cradles for horizontal coils, and waterproof wrapping sealed with moisture-proof tape.

Labeling & Marking Requirements

Each coil must be labeled with: coil number, heat number, grade, dimensions (thickness × width), weight, purchase order reference, and destination. Markings should use weatherproof paint stencils on the inner ring and on external tags. Additional marks include: lifting points, center of gravity indicator, and ‘keep dry’ symbols. Heat number traceability is critical for quality certification.

Container Loading vs Break Bulk Shipping

Coils under 25 tons typically ship in 20ft containers (1-2 coils per container). Larger coils or bulk orders use break bulk vessels with specialized coil carriers. Container loading requires: wooden chocks and wedges, steel wire lashing or nylon belts rated for the coil weight, and weight distribution calculations to ensure even axle loading. Maximum container weight is typically 28 tons gross.
