Steel Coil Edge Conditions: Mill Edge vs Slit Edge Explained

Steel coil edge conditions refer to the physical state of the coil’s side edges after rolling and processing. The two primary types are mill edge and slit edge, each with distinct characteristics that affect downstream fabrication and final product quality.

What Are Steel Coil Edge Conditions?

Steel coil edge conditions refer to the physical state of the coil’s side edges after rolling and processing. The two primary types are mill edge and slit edge, each with distinct characteristics that affect downstream fabrication and final product quality.

Mill Edge: Characteristics & Applications

Mill edge coils retain their original edge from the hot rolling process. The edge is naturally rounded and may contain minor irregularities. Mill edge is typically 20-50mm wider than the final usable width. Common applications include heavy structural fabrication where precise edge quality is not critical.

Slit Edge: Precision & Cleanliness

Slit edge coils are trimmed using rotary slitters after rolling, producing clean, straight edges with tight width tolerances (±0.5mm). This process removes edge defects and produces a uniform width. Slit edge is essential for automotive panels, appliance manufacturing, and precision stamping operations.

How to Choose Between Mill Edge and Slit Edge

The choice depends on your application requirements. Mill edge offers lower cost (10-15% savings) with acceptable quality for structural use. Slit edge commands a premium but delivers superior edge quality for visible surfaces and precision forming. Consider factors like: required width tolerance, surface quality needs, downstream processing methods, and total cost analysis.

Edge Quality Standards & Inspection

Industry standards define acceptable edge conditions. Key inspection criteria include: edge crack depth (typically <1mm for slit edge), camber deviation (max 3mm per 2m for slit), and edge burr height. Proper edge conditioning extends die life in stamping and prevents edge cracking during forming.
